I agree, most cars DO have them on/in the ALT.

Sorry, I wasn't aiming that at you, although I tried telling you its probably not the ALT much earlier in your thread and it seemed as though no one listened.

I was more aiming at the user who stated very incorrectly that it was in the ALT. He obviously knows nothing about the XJs charging system, yet he still felt the need to try and post incorrect information.

and where do you thing the regulator is at? the regulator is in the alternator
Mr. Smartass should really be sure about what he posts before he makes an *** out of himself and causes someone here to spend unnecessary time and money.

I'm the smart-*** ? Look dude I have gone trough so many people that says that knows the **** about XJ's just like you. The reason of this forum is to share knowledge, not to act as a jack *** just cause somebody is wrong or have a different opinion, not even the person who post this is complaining like a little girl

Thanks for the info anyway...

Does it flicker when you go over bumps or randomly?

So the OP is a complaining like a littel girl because they asked a question? Interesting.

The location of the voltage regulator isn't an opinion. Just because you WANT it to be in/on the alternator doesn't make it happen.

Would you like it if you asked where the fuel pump was and someone told you it was located on the block? Then what would happen when you started tearing things apart under the hood looking for the pump when its on the other end of the truck?

You'd be pretty pissed.

And where do you think the regulator is at? In the alternator?

WRONG.

Right there shows that I at least know what I'm talking about when it comes to the basics of the XJ charging system.

I just get irritated when people post obviously incorrect information and try to back it up like its fact.

hey man i just had the same thing happen to me not too long ago. and that one dude is right its the PCM. before i didnt know that the voltage reg was not in the alt so i thought i got a bad rebuilt alt took it off and returned it for a new one but the same $hit happend. so i looked a little deeper into it and its your PCM. my old alt was shot too so i ended up spending lots of money for a new alt, battery and PCM. go to a j/y for the pcm just check that its the same year and style of your jeep.

Test alternator to be sure, but overcharging could definitely be the voltage regulator inside of the computer.

As the computer is awfully hardy, I would try to source one from a salvage yard. Way cheaper than buying a refurb. If a salvage yard near you doesn't have the one you need, they should be able to find one using their locate service, and have it shipped in quickly.

An aftermarket external regulator can be used, but it won't solve the CEL issue.

The CEL will be on forever. So you'll lose its use for future issues.

It was the check gauges light not the check engine light

All I was saying is that you'd have a CEL.
