i would check for current on the ignition terminal of it and see if theres current on the starter selinoid terminal when trying to start

sounds like igbition switch on lower right sideof steering coloum

ignition switch seeing how your just tryinmg to get it running id just put xj in neutral and turn key to run position, take a jumper wire and go from battery post to solenoid wire ,not the post the wire it self

I bypassed the relay and the starter still didn't engage the flywheel?

ok xj in neutral jump the big post on the starter to the small post with screw driver see if starter turns motor over
