There is no crate motor that can be trusted. Best bet is to buy a junkyard engine and have it rebuilt by a local shop with a good reputation. Find out who that is by asking at your local NAPA or other parts store that caters to mechanics. That ain't Autozone, Pep Boys, or Advance, by the way. Or ask a mechanic you trust.
FYI, I got a trans for another vehicle from the dealer a few years ago. I asked if their source was Jasper, and he said no, they dropped them due to quality control problems.

I am with BlueRidgeMark on this one.
I toy with building an engine from time to time for my '00.
Discussed it with my buddy and he says he can do it.
We would not build a stroker per se but maybe do a little something.
Just hoping to come across the right used engine to for this.
Deal with the lower end and use one of the 2 TUPY heads I have in "stock".
After getting it checked and rebuilt if necessary.

Well, first off, an engine rebuilder probably would not call himself a mechanic. And yes, if he's good, he will.

I wouldn't try that but that is just me.
The exhaust ports are larger on the 0630.
The you have to figure out what exhaust manifolds you will run.
And if you choose a 1 piece like a '99 would have then what do you
do about your O2 sensors and front cat.
So there is this:
https://jeepexhaustadapter.com/
Might answer some questions for you.
And you will have to fab a bracket to run your coil bar.
Unless of course you do this:
https://www.ksuspensionfab.com/store...Coil_Mod_.html
Or something similar.

Old fart with a wrench
When I went looking for a motor, I called several places and was told every part is inspected and whatever head it had on it when they got it, if it was good, went back out with the same head on it. I wasn't comfortable with that, so bought a shortblock and reconditioned my Clearwater head. That was a Maabco motor (Tyler. TX). It lasted 1200 miles and the brand new Melling oil pump shaft sheared off resulting in spun bearings! The pump went back it Melling and the motor to Maabco and now I'm waiting to get retribution from SOMEONE! My POS XJ was bought as a backup vehicle for the engine swap in my WJ and has now become my DD. Am I pissed? Hell yes! Except for a week and a half, my WJ has been sitting in pieces since March! OH, and the pump was bought from Pep Boys, who said they sent it back to Melling. When Melling couldn't find it, they asked for the shipping number from Pep Boys. Guess what? It had been sitting on the shelf at Pep Boys for 2 months! At least Melling is standing behind their product and running it thru their lab to find out what happened. I told then it is obvious the shaft was too hard and hadn't been tempered back after heat treat resulting in it breaking. The drive tang on the cam sensor shaft wasn't twisted or damaged at all. Check out the pictures;

Sorry to unload on you guys. This has been eating at me for a long while and someone is going to pay! My mechanic told me not to worry about it and that he would take care of getting full reimbursement for parts, labor, fluids, and even possibly a rental car for me. I'm not holding my breath for that, just a new motor in my WJ that I can rely on.

Or is it a TUPY 0331 head put on by a previous owner?
If original that is a tough call but thinking if I was going through all the trouble of building an engine I would not.
Even if the machine shop gave it a clean bill of health I still would be hesitant to use it.
A TUPY one put on cause the original cracked I would use all day long.
As long as the machine shop gives it a clean bill of health.
If and when I build an engine the short block I use won't be from a '00 or '01 either.
Just find a short block that will work with a distributor and swap over all the necessary electronics.
