Best Guess, Mystery Noise
Alright so I do need to just get the entire front end checked out on this 98 XJ I bought a few weeks ago, but I'm just bored here wondering - there is a tremendous amount of knowledge on this forum so why not give you guys (and gals) a challenge?
I have a noise when I turn sharply, even as much as just pulling out of the driveway, when I turn left or right. In 2wd it is more of a high-pitched "squee-squee-squee-squee". If I put it in 4wd it is a louder "gwaaah-gwaaah-gwaaah" kind of like angry duck.
So...any takers? Will be ready to answer further questions.

I'm willing to bet your front U's are starting to crap out... Mine sounded like that when they first started going, but let's just say I ignored it for a year or so, and now they click when I drive forward, and grind and clunk when I turn, esp. in reverse...
Have fun w/ that, I have a 98 XJ (looks damn near identical to yours), and if they were never replaced before, you're in for a whole lot of fun... just remember these words... PB BLASTER. LOTS AND LOTS OF PB BLASTER... lol

TXstiGuy: Wha?
Skreed: Yes only when turning, very smooth and quiet otherwise
Bowtie: Totally loaded up on PB blaster, that's one of the first things I did. I'm thinking they are original, and at 11 yrs and 140k, I'm probably going to need it.

Ok, just to give you a heads up, I worked for about a day & 1/2 in my driveway taking my wheel bearings out...Just to get at the axles...And I do this for a living...Although when you get ready to do it, I'll tell you the socket trick to get them out, COS and Winston informed me of that one today, and that did the trick...And believe you me, THAT was a lifesaver...
