Like I said, mine has 301,000 miles on original tranny. It is a lifted xj with 33 inch off road tires. this jeep ran the Rubicon, and many other off road treks. It has an external cooler, and was regularly serviced, i.e. the fluid changed. I recently added an inline tranny filter

Magnafine tranny filter...

the filter goes in the hose that goes to the cooler.

As for coolers...hot fluid kills the trannys! I have a book the "Jeep Owners Bible" published by a reputable automotive company. I dont have it in front of me now, but it had a chart of tranny fluid temp verses tranny life, and it was amazing, however adding a cooler can GREATLY increase tranny life.
also if you wheel or end even on the street and have to idle say in a traffic jam, or waiting for another jeep to make it though an offroad obstical, etc you shpuld shift into Park rather than keep it in a gear doing this stops the torque converter from slipping, which generates tons of heat. so when stopped at a long traffic light, waiting for a train, or what ever, shift to park. if you got a temp gage you will be able to see the temp difference of park verses in gear when not moving.

Here is a chart of simular idea to the one in the jeep book...

https://freeautomechanic.com/transmi...mperature.html

At 175F you double the tranny life verses 225F rubber seals and valve parts die rapidly as fluid temp goes up!

here is more info in same vain...

so yes add a cooler ( and a filter too) and maybe add a gage so you can tell how your driving habits can greatly alter the temperature. do not idle in gear, switch to Park for extended idle periods! this is specially important in hot conditions.

make sure when you drive that the torque converter is locking, for when it is slipping, it generates a LOT of heat.

Four transmission shops in my area. Rebuild prices were between $3000 and $4500. With that being said, they all included a 3 year guarantee on parts only, not labor.
Went to the local parts stores and ask for recommendations to have it rebuilt.
Received 3 recommendations to 3 of the same transmission shops..
I did venture in buying a rebuilt from the parts stores, but it looked like the pricing for them ranged from $1800 to $2500. with not great reviews and different grades of transmission(?)
The shop I use sourced out a AW4 from a salvage site a 1996 AW4 with 100300 miles. A full parts and labor warranty for 24mos/240000 miles. They replaced all the seals, new fluid and filter screen, and the final bill was $1200 for the transmission $350 labor and $150 for fluids and seals.

After 2500 miles there has been no issues at all.

Also a big decision was the knowledge that the AW4 is a tough transmission commoningly known to last in the mid to upper 200000 mile range..

If I get another 100000 miles or so, it would be about 10 years worth of my driving habits. I will be ok with that ....

Hope this helps

What shop did you use? And where are they located?

They stopped manufacturing the AW4 years ago - If you are certain you need one (checked all wiring codes etc..)
I replaced mine 4 years ago with a Remains rebuilt transmission -expensive but they have a 5 year guarantee and so far NO problems

Shop in Leesburg Fl called Hamptons....right after the warranty expired the trans would not shift out of first until almost 4000 rpm.....ended up having the trans completely rebuilt, which I should of done in the first place in perfectly clear hindsight.
