Default Best Source for Replacement AW4 Transmission Solenoids

I'm working on a 1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0 2WD that just turned 100,000 miles last week. The very next day it stopped wanting to shift from 1st to 2nd and the check engine light came on.

I checked the codes and got P0700 and P0753 (Corrected from what I initially posted as P0733). I have read a lot of threads about testing and it looks like Solenoid #2 (A) is bad.

Here's where I get confused - Solenoid prices are all over the board. I usually prescribe to the mantra that you get what you pay for but I'm not sure if that's the case here.

Some folks recommend the eBay solenoids, others recommend salvage yard solenoids, and a few say anything but OEM is crap.

I am also seeing ad's that state "this is the updated design and half the size of the tan ones they are replacing." Honestly, that makes me a bit nervous.

I've seen online reviews of the cheap kits complain that the brackets are backwards or the bolt holes are too small or they stop working after 1,000 miles. Others seem to love them.

All the contrary information is making my head spin.

Any recommendations or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

This is my 80 year old mother's car that my Dad gave her for Christmas back in 1997. She loves it and I want to keep it rolling for her.

Thanks for your help!

Joe

I bought mine from ebay (usa.industries) in August 2018. They were fitted very soon after and they've been faultless so far.

Here's a link to the current listing: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/A340-AW4-...EAAMXQs~ZRmREI

I got a kit from Amazon including all 3 valves, the screen and the gasket for under $80.00 last year about this time. So far they're working as advertised.

I have installed a few of the cheap solenoids from Amazon or Ebay, never had any problems out of them.

Are the ones you guys are getting on eBay and Amazon, smaller than the OEM ones they are replacing?

Any fitment issues?

Thanks!

I also bought my solenoids from the same seller as Morat, althought I got the full kit at the time.

15-20k later and they're still spot on. I had no fitment issues.

Identical in every way. If you decide to go this route and drop your pan, be very careful with the solenoid valve connector locking clips. They've been exposed to the oil their entire life and the plastic retainer, part of the connector receptacle on the transmission, is brittle and easily cracks. I cracked the TCC lockout solenoid valve retainer clip and had to use 0.020-inch stainless steel lock-wire to secure the connector halves together. No big deal, I just wished I'd exercised a little more care when swapping it out. The remaining valve swaps went uneventful.

The kit I bought -

The solenoids are the easy part. The dipstick tube, not so much. Have fun with that. You can struggle seperating the two halves of the tube, or unbolt the tube bracket up top and drop the entire thing with the pan.

I just installed the 3 pack from Amazon about 3-4 weeks ago.

So far they are working fine. I did have to enlarge the hole in the bracket slightly on 1 or 2 of them. No big deal with a round file.
I think they were slightly smaller.

At this time I would say I would use them again.

For what it's worth, I bought a set on Amazon and have had zero issues. The listing is not active but here's the description -

The oem solenoids changed shape slightly over the years, but they're all interchangeable. As noted above, the replacements might look slightly different and need a slight tweak to work, but I've yet to see anyone have any failures of the aftermarket ones. By "tweak", I've see a few posts about needing to enlargen the bolt holes a hair and I've had one that needed a slight filing of the bracket to sit flush, and a few that needed a squeeze or a zip tie or wire to get the electrical connector to stay on tight. But most of the posts said the went right in and worked great.

I'd just hit Amazon and buy the et of three, which runs around $60-$70.
