Every body has a different school of thought on this subject. I personally believe if you're going to have just one locker it should be in the rear axle.

A front locker would do the best. THink about it, the back has no weight, the front is where the engine is so theres all the weight, so a locker in the front is the way to go, it'll make a hell of a difference. Its mainly preference. If you mostly mud, one in the front would be better, but if u occasionally mud and mostly street, one in the back would be a good way to go. Either way you will go through more

It depends on what kind of locker you get. If its an electric locker then you can flip it on and off whenever you please. ECTED makes these. Or ARB air lockers too, i don't prefer those. I want an ECTED in the front of mine and just a posi in my rear so its limited slip and doesn't wear out my back tires too too much. Power trax makes a locker that goes in but its always there, it sometimes can be in a bind on the road when you turn making the tires skip a beat here and there. but an electric locker is the way to go in this situation

You have no way to disengage a (non-selectable) front locker in a 92 or newer XJ. Even with the older (91 and older) vacuum disco front D30s, you can't disengage the left front wheel. My school of thought is that if you have never owned or driven a vehicle with a locking differential, it is a heck of a lot easier and SAFER to first learn to drive with a rear locker than to first learn with a front locker.

The ECTED locker acts like an LSD when unlocked and a Full Spool when locked. So, you would still get some wierd pulling on the steering wheel with an ECTED unlocked and the first time you locked it, which would most likely be in an icey or snowy road condition, if you'd never driven in snow and ice with a front locker before, I gurantee would land you in the nearest ditch. Hence, my recommendation to get a rear locker and get used to driving with that first then get a front locker later.

In my opinion ARB sucks. not trying to offend anyone but i mean, u gotta run the tubes and then the compressor. and their expensive as hell, waste of money if u ask me, too much of a hassle.

No, all other selectable lockers are open when unlocked....that I know of. I just did some reading about the ECTED because I was interested in them, and found that they are an LSD when unlocked and a full spool when locked.
