I always heard a bit of a sputtering noise when hard on the throttle but it's gotten worse, and after investigating today I saw that hole in the exhaust manifold near the 3 to 1 collector.

'99 XJ Sport about 240K miles, looks like maybe someone tried to weld it before...

Perfomance loss? I think it must be effecting my gas mileage and low end torque. Right?

I am getting a new Exhaust Manifold delivered in a few days, but I may just try to weld that quick to see if it helps meanwhile. it may be cracked all the way around, which means it won't help much.

Since it's before the O2 it will have an effect. Looks pretty badly corroded so I don't think welding will help. I would start soaking the manifold bolts in penetrating oil now.

You could use muffler putty/epoxy to patch that, but I think that's just delaying the inevitable. You do want to fix that, as sucking in air will cause you to run rich and potentially destroy the cat.

Default The previous exhaust manifold is done.

This other header is just JUNK. Not doing anything but throwing it in the garbage. Cracked all the way through, corroded, and previous welding was dog crap.

Only question is WHY DID I WAIT two years to do this????

Wow. What a difference. The XJ as I have never experienced before. Quiet and strong. This engine is almost too quiet. I mean when I first got this thing the rear diff was about to grenade and the engine-- well it sounded like it has for the past three years. The past two weeks was significant up-tick in exhaust leak noise, but MY GOODNESS, what a difference it makes when it's all correct.

This thing is a beast... sounds more like something that should be towing my Stealth Trailer....

It's so quiet I could sneak up on a ghost at a haunted house convention!

Do yourself a favor and add an exhaust flex joint in the cross section under the trans bell housing.

I am planning to replace what I put in with this one.... as soon as I return from my weekend trip. I wanted to do it originally with this one, but for some reason Amazon would not ship (FROM CA) to California - so I had to send it to my Son who lives in RENO, NV... then after my camping trip - I will strip it down again and redo. That way I can become SUPER familiar with the intake side of the engine! (HA!)

I replaced the exhaust manifold again... with the one above with the flex sections.

Does anyone know if that is going to create a problem for me to get this Jeep Smogged in CA? I never really considered that aspect.

This Jeep dives and runs awesome after the install. The other one I put in had already started to leak a little on the gasket, but i think it may have been damaged before I installed it. This new one was perfect and seems to be running silent (*no whispy sounds or any ticks or anything)

I don’t think that would be a problem with your emissions, my JBA header came with a sticker to put in the car stating it is equipped with one.
