Default Black smoke, low effect

I have black smoke coming out exhaust pipe turning into grey after a while. Happens in all situations except idle and when driving on a flat road. Also I'm lacking effect so running uphill I barely reach 60km/h. Mountains are a nightmare and there are lots of mountains in western part of Norway where I live.

I think the black smoke indicates lack of oxygen in the combustion. How can I adjust this? One guy told me to check the EGR valve and maybe completely remove it, but I read in the workshop manual that these engines does not have EGR systems.

Suggestions?

Thanks folks!

I forgot to put info about the vehicle in my post so here it is:

Jeep Cherokee 1995 2,5 TDI 4X4
Manual 5 shift transmission
Tot km: 260 000
The top is resently replaced
The only thing I've replaced myself is air filter
Motor oil and filter to be done this week

These european VM engines actually do have a EGR system installed

Hope this helps

Well, black smoke is fuel. So either you are lacking oxygen, or you have too much fuel in combustion. Maybe bad EGR, or o2 causing it to run rich? No codes?

Is this a diesel?

More information needed: Did you just buy this Jeep? If so, was it doing this when you bought it?

If it ran fine before you changed the air cleaner, you probably installed it wrong.

Black smoke from a turbo diesel comes from too much fuel for the supplied air. If you have not modified the fuel system then you aren't getting enough boost. Check the boost pressure from the turbo to see if that's the problem. If the turbo has a wastegate make sure that's not opening too soon. If it runs OK under light load it's probably not the EGR.

So thats what TDI is...thought so...I've never seen one here in the States, although I'd like to. My tractors are diesel and I'd love to have a diesel XJ. Almost bought a Liberty diesel...then got warned off them by a friend at Chrysler R&D.

I found that the gasket on the air inlet manifoil is partly missing in each end of it (!) causing exhaust to pour out. I presume this happens because of the EGR system. I will have the worshop replace the gasget and clean check the EGR valve aswell.

Next thing on my list is the turbo.

And yeah, TDI means turbo diesel injection. Or so I've heard.
