Default Blower Doesn't Work on #3

I have a '00 XJ Sport. My Blower works on all the positions but #3. Is the switch the likely culprit here?? Thanks for any input,

Jeff

Nope, switch is nearly indestructible. Speeds 1, 2, and 3 are run through a resistor pack that steps down the voltage for a lower fan speed. What usually happens is that this blower motor resistor goes out. $15 or so on RockAuto.com and easily replaced.

I got it from a local parts store across from my work.

Sorry, Rock Auto. $36 is pretty good for a brick and mortar shop. Clowns here want $75 before tax.

I guess what I am hearing is the resistor is bad then?? Every one I've ever replaced has been bad with only the high setting working.

Here's a schematic of the blower circuit.

If you have an Ohmmeter you can check the continuity of the fan speed control circuit, from connector C209 back to the fan speed control on the AC/Heat control panel. The C209 connector pinout shown on the schematic. C209 is accessed by rolling down the glove box.

With the fan speed selector switch in #3 position, read from pin 4 in connector C209 to chassis ground. There should be continuity.

The blower connector has a habit of melting. If its in good shape you can read the resistance of the #3 resistor in the resistor block. With the connector removed from the block, read between pins 3 and 4 on the resistor block. If you read an open the resistor is smoked. You can do a comparison on the other resistors.
