That sounds like valve stem seals to me.

You could confirm with a dry, then wet, compression test.

Is this a 1989 4.0 liter engine?

Is there a factory service manual he can use to replace the valve stem seals?

I took the 1984 thru 2000 Jeep Cherokee Haynes manual I have out my outhouse (emergency wipe) and took a look at it. There is data in there about changing the seals, but I think further assistance will be needed along the way.

A couple of weeks ago I replaced my valve cover gasket - 86'd the OEM gasket that had been in there for about 5 years. Went on with a Felpro gasket.

Of course I took the chance to look everything over and found my #1 exhaust valve spring somewhat loose (could wiggle it a bit) so I replaced it and the valve stem (guide) seal. My motor doesn't 'smoke', just did it as a preventive maintenance measure. The FSM is clear about there being intake seals and there being exhaust seals... different animals. I got the spring and seal from the dealer.

Also found the #1 rockers and pivots quite worn (could catch my fingernail on the edge of the wear marks) so I changed them all. Turned out they were all quite worn. Engine only has 135,000 on it! Sealed Power kits from NAPA.

Here's a pic of my valve spring compressor in action. It's a sweet tool. It's made by KTC. Got it off of Amazon.com.

P.S. Don't laugh at my fuel injector connector locks or I'll kill ya.

Ya its the 89 4.0 ho i have a buddy that can do it for 100 bucks witch i think is better than doing it myself. If i was to do it by myself how wld i do it?

'89's are not High Output (HO).

Renix motor.

HOs began in 1991.

Yea^ "High Output" started in 91 I gather. Higher intake ports I guess.

Anyway, Green injectors? Anybody know what's up with that? I'm looking to loose my 703's and go to 19# thinking mine run rich in open loop.

Sorry you guys i get confused i have two jeeps the one is an 93 with the 4.0 ho that is blowing smoke an my other one is a 89 wih the renix engine thats fine.

Not that big of a deal. HO stands for Highly Overrated anyway.

Check out this How To video. Its the one I used to change the seals in my jeep. The vehicle in the video isn't a jeep but the basic principle is the same. Its pretty straight forward. The only problem I had was removing the final valve spring at the rear of the engine. The firewall hangs over just a bit making it a tight fit for the spring compressor. Good luck!

Those are Bosch 0280155789/Chrysler 4861047 injectors out of a 2000 T&C with a 3.3 flex fuel engine. They were used in 1997 - 2000 Dodge and Chrysler flex fuel vans. My 2000 POS Vin G T&C has them.

I made a spread sheet to compare these injectors to the original 04854181 injectors. I don't know how accurate the test data point is and it may be off, but I got it off one of the injector vendor's web site.

Get the valve stem seals from the dealer.

Exhaust Valve seal P/N 53009887, need 6 each, msrp $2.45 each

Intake Valve seal P/N 53009886, need 6 each, msrp $3.45 each

These are the current seals and part numbers. They supersede the 1993 seals/numbers.
