Congratulations on getting a Cherokee. It sounds like you got a good deal. I have a 99 SPORT WITH 45,000 miles. paid 2200.00 for it. keep working on the fixes. note: Bigger tires = poorer mileage.

Ticking is common on the 4.0, and isn't always a sign of something bad. Any idea where the noise is coming from? Is it the same hot/cold? Any change with rpm?

I could understand a light tick, this tick matches RPMs and has a chattering sound when I hit the throttle by hand. It doenst matter the engine temp, it always does it.
Who here thinks I'm safe driving this for a few months until I can get it fixed (having certified the problem of course). The repairs wouldn't be beyond my abilities I just have another project occupying garage space.
If it is a bad lifter, can that one lifter be rebuilt?

If it is a collapsed lifter, that means the spring inside is shot? Couldn't the spring inside be replaced instead, keeping the lifter thats mated to the cam?

After many miles of running with a stuck lifter wouldn't the spring be pretty well dead? Buy a set of new lifters and use the new springs only, I see no harm in it to the engine
