Half that is still $375 which is still outrageous. Why didn't you just do it yourself?

OK guys I have an update and I need some help. I took the jeep to a different transmission shop. They seem really good. They found the overdrive solenoid is bad, I am having them replace the other 2 as well. They also found the transmission mount for the exhaust is causing my vibration issues.

Next he found the neutral safety switch is cracked up and was full of water. This is where I could use your help. He says for a Chevy he can find these for about $40. He says the cheapest one he found for me is $200. Is that what you guys paid if you had to buy one? Do you know of a food source for a safety switch? Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately that sounds about right. They go for around $200 on Rock-Auto as well (I'm actually surprised they aren't charging you more, most shops usually mark up parts significantly more than parts stores do). The only place you're likely to find one much cheaper is a used one from a junkyard or Ebay (and it is a part known to wear out so used probably isn't the best option). The NSS for the AW4 isn't a simple switch like on some transmissions, it is a combination Neutral Safety Switch and Range Sensor (tells the TCM what gear is selected).

OK that is great information. Yes he said he could get the part from rock auto at the same price I found it on rock auto.

It looks like amazon has one (aftermarket) for your 98 for $120 though:

Plugs require taking the intake manifold partially off on her engine for some reason, and the trans fluid isn't doable at home. You need the VAG-COM program from VW and the obd2 connectors & some weird pump to install the trans fluid. You pump it in from the bottom it seems, and the computer tells you when its full. No dipstick.

Ol girl gota whole bunch of quarts of new fluid, new filter, plugs & wires for 300 out the door IIRC. Still makes me want to punch myself in the face considering how easy the jeep is. I don't have the work ethic to do that VW shiza in the snow & cold with the Denver bums asking me for money lol

Thoughts on RMP vs Rebuild?

any junkyards in your area? LOL, get a new used tranny, and NSS from a JY and pay for the labor to have it installed and you probably would've saved a bunch of money.

Not good, that probably means water got into it, which is very bad for an automatic transmission (or just about any mechanical device).

Replacement is probably your best option, you should be able to find a good low-mileage used AW4 for significantly less than a full rebuild of your current trans.

Rust inside something that is almost all aluminum and filled with silicone - water repellent (silicone - trans fluid)

I agree water is real bad for transmissions.... but RUST??

It might be.... but I would be surprised - was the trans fluid strawberry milkshake color at anytime? Maybe the previous trans shop dumped rust into it????

This is why I do 99.9% of my own work on my jeeps, too many scammers our there !!!!
