I agree water is real bad for transmissions.... but RUST??

It might be.... but I would be surprised - was the trans fluid strawberry milkshake color at anytime? Maybe the previous trans shop dumped rust into it????

This is why I do 99.9% of my own work on my jeeps, too many scammers our there !!!!

I suppose it is also possible that the trans cooler (heat exchanger) in the radiator failed (either currently or sometime in the past) and dumped rusty coolant from an unmaintained cooling system into the trans.

To the OP: make sure to check for this, it would suck to put a new (used) trans in it and just have it fail again from coolant contaminated fluid. It is also important to make sure the cooler and lines are flushed even if they are good, otherwise you're putting whatever crud was in the old fluid into your "new"/rebuilt trans.

That is what we think happened. I am having it rebuilt with all new clutches and torque converter, and anything else that is bad. The original trans lines to the radiator are being capped off and an external seperate trans cooler is being installed.

I hope I get a refund this year!
