Default Brake Booster

1998 Jeep Classic 4.0 - Bought a remanufactured BHH 54-73154 brake power booster in June this year and it went belly up. It has a lifetime warranty but I'm not inclined to replace it with the same make (screw me twice, etc.). O-Reillys only carries that particular booster so a complete refund is in order (and approved per their counter sales) if I can't find another brand.

At the moment the truck's braking is now non-powered, requiring a bit of peddle pressure like the old non-boosted brake days. When I press the peddle it's very firm at the top of the stroke and causes the engine RPM to increase a couple hundred revs. RPM returns to normal when the peddle is released. That would be a normal reaction to a vacuum leak.

Does anyone know of another booster brand/part number they've had good reliability with? I won't have a core at this point if I get the refund from O'Reillys but it's not a deal breaker if the booster is a reputable unit.

Rock Auto has ACDelco for $69, $10 core charge. Both of their selections are remanufactured.

Some folks like to use the booster from a Grand Cherokee. It's a bit bigger and gives better stopping. There's a bit of minor modding to do, I understand, but from what I've read, it's not difficult and the results are excellent.

OT: Strange thing, my 1996 XJ started stopping a whole lot better after I installed a driver's seat from a Grand Cherokee. But since the old seat was completely collapsed, even the back, I suspect it is because I am now using the pedals from an upright sitting position rather than an almost laying on the floor position, LOL!

Replaced the booster. Odd duck, the booster's actuator arm that attaches to the brake pedal lever was shorter than the original by about 1/4 inch and just short of actuating the brake light switch. So, ty-wrapping a piece of heater hose around the brake pedal lever took up the distance to kill the brake lights. Then, it occurred to me that because the brake switch is not adjustable on its mount and all other things are non-adjustable, I'd go look at a new brake switch. Sure enough, the actuator on the switch is a self-adapting linear ratchet that automatically adjusts to brake pedal throw. I did not know that. So, I bought the switch, removed the rubber hose from the brake pedal lever, installed the new switch and gently let the pedal lever contact the extended switch actuator. The pedal ratcheted the switch actuator inwardly until the lever stopped. The switch was just under $14.00.
