Default brake lights and hazards out HELP!!

help please for gods sake. just got back from out of town and the wife was using my 91 xj. no brake lights or hazards. parking lights, reverse, and turn signals all work fine. i have looked at previous threads and these are the steps ive taken. changed bulbs, checked fuse (think i found the right one) not labled, changed brake light switch at pedal, restripped and made new ground connections, replaced hazard relay switch, restripped and made new power connections. retraced what i think is the correct wires and found no breaks. ive been at it now for about 9 hours and im losing my mind. any help would be appreciated. thanks.

i'm now on 22 hours on this project. tried spraying wd-40 on the hazard button on the steering column, i know for sure i am getting power at the brake switch, but from there the wire color changes and goes into the firewall and connects to some "giant wiring harness" on the drivers side near the fan. what is this the brains or something. c'mon guys im dying out here. i know youre looking, just send me any ideas. I'm the stupid one not you.

I'm not very knowledgeable about wiring, but since everything else works I'll venture a guess. Does your hi-mount brake light work?
I'd try taking the turn signal flasher and using it in place of the hazard-flasher one. Maybe that flasher is bad and preventing current flow to the brake lights which is the rear lights that flash in hazard mode. (?)

I can't access XJ wiring info. This is for a WJ but an XJ should be similar. The Body Control Module supports the exterior lighting, among other things. Might not be your problem but just trying to help.

just a thought but you may want to trace the wires with a lighted energy finder thing I dont know what its exactly called, looks like a pen super sharp at one end to poke into the wire and has a ground wire, ya im sure you know what Im talking about, put a brick on your brake pedal and start at the wires by brake lights and move toward the front

Do you mean that you have a manual switch to turn on the brake lights???? Man, I hate chasing electrical problems because I am so impatient...
