Default Brake Master Cyl life expectancy

We've had our 90' Cherokee for twenty years and it has 250,000 miles on it and have never changed the brake master cylinder.

No telling if it is the original master.

My question is:

What is the expected life expectancy of a brake master cylinder?

Should I leave well enough alone or feel like I am on borrowed time and just change it out (same with the wheel cylinders).

If so what brand of master do you recommend?

Still have the original on my '88.

How is your brake fluid? Brake lines? Unless there some major work required I'd not bother.

If it ain't broke.....

I had a Chrysler unit last about 35 years before it started hissing. Plenty of warning to order the new one. Didn't even reach the hard pedal level. The rusted pin made it a B to get out.

Ever change out your brake fluid? That can extend the life of all hydraulic brake components.

Use a turkey baster and remove all the old fluid you can from the master cylinder.
fill with fresh fluid. bleed brakes in the correct sequence until you see fresh fluid.

Great point! So many people never do this, and pay the price down the road.
The booster that eventually failed on me had been abused prior to me owning it. The brake fluid I changed out was somewhere between black coffee and black paint. And still that booster lasted that long. I think it was the last thing I replaced in that brake system. I suspect it failed because the master leaked out of it's input shaft into the booster.

If its a 1990 XJ, and you have the Bendix 9 abs system, I think the bleeding procedure is different.
Also before disconnect anything, you need to pump the brake pedal at least 50 times with engine off to release pressure from the system. If not it can explode
