Default Brake pedal to floor a couple of times only

Hello, yesterday on the highway near home I pressed the brake pedal and it
surprised me and it went to the floor. I pumped a couple of times and got a little
pressure in the system, but I just drove home in low gear (I have a five-speed
so I don't use the brakes really very much). I looked underneath and no leaks.
My mechanic came to the house today, found nothing and took it to his place.
He took all the tires off, found no problem, said the rear pads were OK still,
returned it, and the brakes work normally.

What could cause a singular failure like I had yesterday ? Thanks.

98 XJ with ZJ rear discs, ZJ prop valve and a WJ booster and master cylinder.

Just had a master cylinder on a "Brand X" vehicle go bad with the same symptom. It could be leaking just internally, or leaking out the rear seal into the brake booster. Pull the master and check it, exposure to brake fluid can damage the booster.

Thank you for the replies. The WJ master cylinder and booster came
from the junkyard about 8 years ago. I have noticed a very slight drop in brake
fluid level the past month but there are no leaks in the lines or at the wheels.
I'll ask my mechanic to see if the mc is leaking as you say.
