Default brake problem

hi, i have a 98 xj i'm having problems with my rear brakes. i can get fluid to the rear if i use a vacuum bleeder, but i cant get any with the brake pedal. what would cause fluid to not go to the rear? is it my proportioning valve?

thanks, Mark

Question

Maybe! I am assuming that you are getting brake fluid to the front brakes. If so, It could be the proportioning valve or the master cylinder itself. By the way you have a nice rig!

I'm going with master cylinder. If it were a blocked PV (never heard of it BTW) vacuum bleeder would not get fluid either.

Sounds like the master cylinder.

I'll try this tonight. I thought it was the master cylinder to and replaced it already, but it's still the same as it was. New one could be bad to i guess.

Did you bench bleed the MC before installation?

Yes I bench bled it before I installed it. I haven't had a chance to work on it today, but I'll post up some more details. So far I have replaced the master cylinder, the wheel cylinders and the shoes, I also took off the rear brake lines and blew them out with compressed air. I vacuum bled it and got fluid to the rear no problem but i can undo the bleeders with pressure on the pedal and it doesn't drop at all. I don't get whats going on.

Thanks, Mark

So when you bench bled the master cylinder did you get fluid from the rear brake portion of the reservoir? If you did on the bench and you are not now the problem could be associated with the brake pedal actuator.

Did the rear brake problem exist prior to replacing the master cylinder?

Did you disconnect the brake line on both ends prior to the compressed air operation? If so, which way did you blow air?

My suggestion: Remove the brake lines from the master cylinder. Re-install the bench bleeding system and use the brake pedal to see if there is fluid being pumped from the rear brake reservoir. If the actuator somehow got off center in the master cylinder it could e the cause of your problem.

Finally got time to work on it today, cracked the lines at the master, no pressure going to the rear so I pulled the master to adjust the pushrod in the booster.

Is it supposed to be bent like that? and does any one know how long it's should be adjusted?
