Brakes Brakes Broke
ok, my rear wheel cylinder has been leaking for a few weeks. Been low on cash so I've been roughing it just pumping the brakes.
being I haven't had any spare cash and currently im just looking to get them working.
How bad would it be to skip getting the drums/rotors turned/replaced
to save the $30-60 for now.
Other than the pads wearing a lot quicker, any harm in this.

cash is tight for me too, but 15 bucks a for a wheel cylendar at advance, tighten up the belt a little and be SAFE. you never know when your neighbors idiot kid is going to run out in the street and you dont have time to pump your brakes. if your rotors aren't warped from overheating, dont bother to get em turned

damn...
if you can, at least get the cylinder replaced, or get a rebuild kit. they are not that difficult to work on. when i rebuilt my rear drums, i rebuilt both the cylinders, since one had a blown seal, and the internals of the other one were just fifthly. last owner of mine i don't think did any maintenance what-s-ever. i believe you can find a kit on Amazon for cheap.

I would replace that WC and bleed the system ASAP, but if your rotors/drums aren't grooved & the pads/shoes aren't down to metal & and the brake pedal isn't pulsing /kicking back on your foot when braking then you can get by in a pinch by just sanding the rotors/drums & replacing the pads/shoes. JMO
Rotors/drums aren't that expensive & usually need replacing on every 2nd or 3rd brake job.
It's more than a money issue. If you apply heavy brake pressure on thin rotors/drums in an emergency situation they can fail. Also the caliper pistons/wheel cylinders can exceed their designed travel when working on overly thin rotors/drums causing seal failure resulting in brake loss.

I have never had drums or rotors turned and Ive done alot of brake jobs. If they are warped then I replace them but if they are not then I replace the pads or shoes. You will be fine. 2xs on getting the wheel cylinder replaced.

Yeah get that wheel cylinder replaced, they are cheap enough and if you do it yourself the cash outlay isn't to bad. Getting the drums and rotors turned IMHO is a good thing but it's not mandatory unless they are truly out of whack. I have done brake jobs without getting them turned many times. The main thing with rotors is if they aren't warped or heavily grooved you can get away with it. Also remember your front brakes are far more important as about 70% or so of your braking comes from the front. If you can afford to buy the wheel cylinders get em above all as that will give you back your braking pressure and if possible get the front rotors turned. I think I pay like $10 a rotor to have em turned locally. Just remember your brakes are what stops you and keeps you from having a wreck.

You need to remember that as the pads/shoes wear, the rotors/drums also wear. You can see that they will also need to be replaced, because of becoming thin, with repeated use. Whether they are warped or not. They need to be miked to checked for thickness.

replace the $10.00 w.c. and ride it until you can afford the rest. With a leaky w.c. your constantly loosing fluid and it won't be to long before even with pumping the brakes you can't stop. Happened to me and its not a fun feeling

Picked up the wc, shoes and the hardware kit.
I see someone mentioned sanding the drums to get by, I assume sanding being knock down any rough spots, not to actually fully turn them myself.
Depending on if I need to turn or go cheap on the drums, I'll pick up the pads tonight and get that done also.
but yeah, the wc has been leaking and the brakes are almost down to pumping doesnt matter anymore.
