Default Breather with no hose on top of motor?

Hey all - I think my XJ has had 48 previous owners, and one of them left me this present:

Is that OK? I'm just used to seeing a hose coming out of something like that...

Not optimal.
What year?
There should be a hose going to the intake manifold from that one.

95 - yeah, I wondered about that...supposedly it got a different motor about a year ago, so no telling what's in there or where it's been!!

Go ahead and find your perspective owner's manual and go through the index. You will find a hose schematic somewhere. I tried to find a good photo so you can use that as well because sometimes it is hard for people to read the schematics.

This photo is from the interwebs not from the manual I'm to tired to search through it myself XD

yeah that one is supposed to get vaccum from the intake manifold. I would recommend getting a new ccv and pcv valve just for maintenance because those ones look a little old. And the front valve on the valve cover goes to the air box (don’t hook the front one to the manifold because then your cover won’t get proper circulation hook it to the airbox and I say this because your air box has different vacuum pressure than the manifold and if you hook it to the manifold it will have the same vacuum therefore causing no circulation just vaccum the whole point in those valves is circulation)

Idunno, that breather he has looks like it will hold up a lot better than the plastic ones that want to crumble and fall into the cover. Kind of a brilliant mod really.

oh I didn’t really look at that but yeah you probably should keep those but if you want you can replace the gromits on there

The rear fitting has a metered orifice to provide the right amount of draw to properly ventilate the crankcase. The fumes are then drawn into the intake manifold to burn off.

Hey all.......would you believe this tab has been open in my browser for the last year and a half?? Other stuff got more pressing but now I'm getting oil in the airbox, and I'm reading that a clogged CCV system could cause that.

I really appreciate all these old replies - I promise I wasn't ignoring them, I was just totally new to jeeps and trying to get everything figured out!! Also, I've got some overheating and vacuum issues, so I'm thinking it might be best to return this system to stock - does that sound like a good plan? Also, I've currently got an empty port on the intake (plugged, of course) - would it be as simple as running a hose from the new rear crankcase fitting to an appropriately-sized fitting on the intake?

Many thanks, all!

Yeah, you're getting oil in the airbox because the CCV is all dorked up, and not drawing anything into the intake via the rear orifice. Is the vac line that's supposed to go there, or just hanging somewhere causing a vacuum leak?

Cruiser has a mod to minimize getting oil into the airbox, btw. http://cruiser54.com/?p=131
