broken driver's seat, please help?
My driver's seat is broke and was when I got my XJ recently. The mounting bracket has broken and the seat is like a rocking chair now. When I hit the gas, I almost end up in the back seat. Is this something that I can just have welded or is it gonna just break again? Right now I just have it secured with rope but I need to fix it properly.

I believe this is a common problem. i cannot weld or braze, but I removed my seat and installed some bracing and bolted it down. I do not know of a solution.

I welded mine last week and it's still holding up. I welded everything that was cracked back together and all four hole were torn so I welded washers to the surrounding area to make up for the missing metal. It's pretty sturdy and will probably last longer than the whole Jeep.

i bought my girlfriend a 96 xj from a large lady and it had the same problem, the left front bolt ripped through part of the bracket, and the right rear mount had snapped off, i used my little 115 volt flux cored mig, took the seat out, put down a 2'' weld on the left front between the two rectangle tracs, and another 2" weld on the left rear, and almost 2 years later it is still holding fine, if you do this have a fire extinguisher, or water near by, bc i did manage to start the underside of the padding smoldering good luck whichver route you take

I used a fire blanket to cover the seat, so I didn't have a problem welding mine up. He makes a good point though, so be ready to extinguish a fire.

Thanks for the replies, I'm gonna take the seat out tomorrow and give it a go. I acutally wouldn't mind if it caught fire since I'll be welding it up in the engine bay at my fire dept. May give me and the boys something to do

Could someone post pictures of where the weak spot is? I am buying a '99 with a seat that seems to be fine, but would like to reinforce it before I have a problem.
Thanks

The entire frame is the weak spot. The back of mine seemed to be worse than the front, though. The bolt holes were also torn and cracked on mine. A little bit of welding and some washers to reinforce the bolt holes and it was good as new. Still holds up great.

I havent seen a weak spot so much as rust isues, pretty much where the seat frame meats the rusty floor the rust just spreads right up the frame of the seat. prevent rust and you wont have a problem.

broken seat repair
My driver's seat in my 99 XJ broke as well, in 2007. I took the seat out the frame on the seat bottom had broken. I used some brackets and bolts from the hardware store and fashioned a connection. Still works today.
