Default Broken exhaust manifold bolt.

1998 Cherokee 4.0L

So unfortunately one of the studs on my exhaust manifold sheered off. And when I went to drill out the bolt and extract it, the bolt extractor broke as well does anyone have any tips on how to get this broken stud out that does not involve removing the whole head? Should I just try to get another bolt extractor and drill it out again?

Any help is much appreciated!

Soak it with PB blaster for a day or two or three. Then try a reverse drill bit.

I may even hit it with some heat around the outside, hoping the stud will loosen a little. Hopefully the reverse drill bit will bite into the stud and turn it out.

Of course, I am not expert with broken bolts, only having done a couple in my short Jeep fix life. Hopefully more experienced members will advise.

Good luck

Or you can try if you have a mig welder , weld a nut to the stud , just hold a nut over the stud then use a mig and weld the nut to the stud through the holl in the nut .

Unfortunately i do not have a welder. think I may just try to go get a better drill bit and a better bolt extractor and try again after soaking it in pb blaster for a few more days

are you saying the broken off extractor is still in there?...if so you want to try and get that out first, as it will be almost impossible to drill

you can try a small ***** punch with a hardened tip to shatter it

As said above, drilling through the broken extractor will be almost impossible. They are hardened steel and will easily destroy the new drill bit. You can try breaking the extractor with a punch (I have never had this work for me, but it is always worth trying). It looks like your extractor is off center of the bolt, so you may be able to get another drill bit into the bolt next to the broken extractor, which will hopefully remove some of the pressure from the broken extractor.

Removing a broken extractor is never fun. Patience will be needed for sure.

My sympathies. I hate bolt extractors. They are brittle and near impossible to drill when they break. If you use too small of a bit, they break right away. Go too big on the drill hole, and the extractor will expand the bolt just like a concrete anchor and make it even harder to extract.
