The direct replacement is less than $20 at O'Reilly's. You just need to slide four clips backward on the hoses and pull one vacuum line to remove the old one.

One thing you may want to consider is removing/eliminating the heater control valve, if you haven't already. '96 down have the HCV, '97 up the Factory eliminated it.
During the warm months, with a HCV, (temp lever/**** never moved off cold) coolant sits and stagnates inside the heater core.....There's no fresh coolant/corrosion protection circulation through the heater core.
With the HCV removed/eliminated, coolant/corrosion protection flows through the heater core constantly when the motor is running, regardless of where the temp lever/**** is set.
Also, you don't have to remember to turn/slide the heat lever/**** when flushing/re-filling the cooling system because coolant is flowing to/through the heater core when the motor is running and the HCV is absent.
Be sure to plug/cap the small vacuum hose when eliminating the HCV.
HCV Removal
The heat is controlled by the blend air door. I've eliminated at least 10 of them here in Arizona and my AC always works perfectly.
Actual field experience has proven time and time again, by numerous different people, that there is NO downside to eliminating the HCV..
It flat works. Period.
The other benefits are keeping coolant flowing versus being stagnant in the heater core and the dangers/disastrous results of having a valve fail unexpectedly whether you're poking around the engine bay or driving down the highway or trail.

I removed my HCV on my 1992 XJ after replacing it 3 times with the aftermarket ones.. I finally ditched it. That was 10 years ago. A/C is ice cold and heater works. My 97, and both 99 XJs don't have the valve anyways.

Totally agree with everyone else. Put the 97+ heater hoses on it, plug up the vacuum line and you're good to go. I did this on my 95 heat and A/C work exactly as they did prior to the HCV elimination.

Definitely going to ditch the HCV. Have an old 97 kicking around but I imagine removing those old hoses will be more of a headache then making it to the part store.

So what's the official word on this hose splicing thing ???
Can you just swap them so same size hose to same size fitting and reverse the heater core flow? Is that what Jeep did on the stock 97++ models?

The plastic splices from NAPA are fine. Look like the ones up above. they are rated for this purpose and have lasted 10 years without failure so far on my rigs.

I think that when I get around to it, I will just go with two 97+ new hoses. After 30 years I don't trust trying to reconnect the original ones (at least I'm guessing they have never been replaced).

Choppy idle and take off
Following the spark plug change and removing the hcv without issue the xj is idling somewhat choppy and not smooth like before. Any possible issues that could have surfaced despite my lack of information given?
seems like the choppy ness is half way down my exhaust manifold, muffled clapping
