Default Broken muffler/tailpipe. Which part(s) do I need to replace?

The tailpipe has gotten separated from the muffler.
I want to determine what parts I need to buy,
and if I can start this project myself.

Can you help my figure out what parts I need?
When I had this muffler replaced 2 years ago, I think I ordered the muffler from Rockauto.
I do not recall it coming with a tailpipe, though. It was just the muffler.

Here is the back, where the muffler exits to the long curved tailpipe.
Does the muffler come with a little but of pipe that was welded to the tailpipe?
If there is any welding involved, I will have to take this to a professional.

Here is the front, where the cat meets the muffer.
If you cut off that clamp, will it come apart easily?
How is this held together? Is it welded?
Do I just twist the muffler back and forth to get it apart?

Looks like #7 refers to the muffler and tailpipe as one part. (52101051)

On RockAuto, they sell the parts individually, which means they are welded. Damn.
Tailpipe is WALKER Part # 55188 for $42
Muffler is WALKER Part # 18568 for $27

I put this system on mine('96) by myself last year. I had to chisel the muffler to converter connection. Other than that it was easy. I'm showing this just to give you an idea of what you'll need.

I am wondering if I could do part of this at home.

1) Get the muffler seperated from the catalytic converter. (Not yet sure if possible)

2) Use an angle grinder (or Dremel cut off wheel since it's safer) to cut off the tailpipe from the muffler.

3) Install new muffler and join it to the old tailpipe with JB Weld? Would that hold until I am able to get a pro to do the final welding?

Hey Earl,
Thanks for your reply. Basically, you need to cut off that clamp and then just bash the muffler off ?

I actually have an air chisel I could use. Where exactly did you point the chisel?
Since the back of the muffler is unsecured, the muffler is able to move backwards.
So, do you just chisel the lip of the muffler that is over the cat pipe?

Is this connection welded? or just clamped?

It just clamped. I couldn't hammer the muffler off so split the muffler pipe in various locations and peeled it back. Took a while.

JB won't hold. Why not clamp it temporarily. Also that muffler to tailpipe connection looks like the wrong muffler was used. It should have slipped over the tailpipe.

Ok, so don't even bother with JB Weld.

The problem is welding the tailpipe to the muffler. There is no clamp there. The front has a clamp, but the back does not.
Are you saying just buy a 2nd clamp, like the one in the front, and use that to temporarily attach the rear connection without welding?

That's what I'd do. Only thing is will the new muffler clamp get tight enough on that short coupler. Make sure you get the right size new muffler and new tailpipe. You shouldn't need that coupler.

Yea, that middle coupler thing looks weird.
I am just going to buy a new tailpipe, just in case.
I think the muffler is $40 and tailpipe is $50.
I can refund the tailpipe if I end up using the old tailpipe with that coupler.

If you end up temporarily clamping to the coupler put some high temp rtv on the joint first.

THAT's a two year old muffler? Mine didn't look that bad after 15 years, four of them spent in the salt belt. What have you been doing, wheeling in Superfund sites?

If it was a cheapo thin aluminized one they won't last long. That being said it think I have the same cheapo one on my XJ (installed by the previous owner) and it doesn't look that bad after 5 years of exposure to PA salt (but it will likely need to be replaced again in another year or two). The 20 year old OE front pipe on mine is in better shape (surface rust, but not pitting or flaking) than the aftermarket replacement muffler and tail pipe (which are not rusted through yet, but do have pitting and flaking so I'd only give them a couple years at most).

Yeah the cheap ones don't last. That said this is also the barnacle, to quote Ron.

I did my old chevy with lap band clamps years ago, no leaks, no welding. Bought a similar kit mentioned above but used these clamps instead. You wanna save as much of that cat pipe as possible.
