Default Broken Spedometer Cable

Hi everyone, I replaced my dash lights with LEDs and now the spedometer and odometer have stopped working. I found out the issue was the spedometer cable, which I must have broken. Before this, the spedometer cable worked, but “twitched,” so it must have been pretty weak to begin with.

I have a 1988 XJ Limited 4.0 4x4. It has cruise control. I came to learn there are different spedometer cable lengths for XJs with cruise control. But then I seemed to find out it wasn’t the whole cable I needed (there were different lengths, I think one was 60-some inches, and another one even longer.) If I understand it correctly, there’s one cable that goes from the transfer case to the cruise control; one cable that goes from the cruise control to the pulse width sensor; and finally a cable that goes from there to the gauges.

I purchased a used cable that runs from the gauge cluster at the spedometer to the pulse width sensor under the dash. Is that the right cable to replace, most likely? The cable looks to be a few inches long from the photos provided on eBay. The ends look like what I have, from what I could see with a flashlight behind the dash cluster. Has anyone ever replaced this cable before? I tried looking for YouTube videos for the procedure, but couldn’t find anything. I assume it’s a tight fit, with the cable only being a few inches, and how easily I broke the old one. Any tips before I get the cable in the mail early this week?

Thanks

There are 2 cables. One from the trans (or transfer case) to the sensor (lower cable), and then from the sensor to the back of the speedo (upper cable). It threads onto the sensor but has a plastic collar that slips over the speedo.

The upper is part number 53004955 (fits '87 - '89). The '90 has a different part number so I don't know if it fits.

I've not replaced mine but have had to remove the cluster to deal with a sticky speedo. You can reach up and unthread it off the sensor, then carefully remove the cluster. The upper cable feeds through a hole in the structure.
