Bumper & Trim Paint Experience Requested
Does anyone have experience in locating paint for use on plastic bumpers and trim? I am attempting to get a close match for the original silver paint color on the trim of a 1991 Cherokee Laredo that has body color PW7, Bright White. This color may have been called “Dark Argent” and possibly used from ’85 to ’92. I found that color name referenced in the sales brochure for 1992 and some OE bumper parts that came in Argent (now discontinued). The paint is not textured. It has a gloss finish similar to the body paint and appears to have had a clear coat over it. There are a lot of Argent paints out there but I have not found anything yet specifically identified as proper for the original Cherokee bumpers/trim. There was another trim color used on some models that was in the range of a light gold color. On the door tag I only find the paint code for the body. If the trim paint code is there I don’t know what to look for.
I am in the process of replacing fender flares and bumper parts where black bed liner was applied. The bed liner is flaking off, partially exposing the original silver. It looks bad and there does not seem to be a good way to remove the bed liner. The previous owner had it done. If anyone is considering applying bed liner over painted trim and body panels – DON’T do it! It is rough and eventually it flakes off in little pieces.
In summary: What is the paint code for the silver bumpers/trim? Any suggestions on a source for paint that is a decent match in color and finish and suitable for the plastic parts? For these smaller parts I am considering that aerosol cans might be OK.

I am fairly sure there is a paint code for those trim bits on the riveted plate under hood that is full of numbers
somewhere on this forum is a way to decode that plate
once you have the code, get it mixed in aerosol, or made up in 2pac, , scuff & prime with a "plastic" primer (for bumpers etc)

I went through the same thing not too long ago, I have a 96'. I have the light gold color you speak of and Internet searches didn't yield any concrete info. The paint code on the door wasn't any help. I had the build sheet for my jeep and it had the trim color listed but not the paint code for some reason. I went to my local auto paint store and we looked it up. When we found the color it actually had a different name than my build sheet.

Thanks DD and awg for the inputs. On the body tag I find the primary and secondary paint codes (both the same) but nothing I can identify as trim color yet. I will keep searching and post what I learn. I may check with my Chrysler service department and see what info they might have. Good tip on getting it mixed in aerosol. That reminded me that my NAPA guys can get me custom paint in aerosol cans once I know what I need.

I don't have a plate visible near the radiator that I immediately find, maybe its hidden under the top radiator support. There is a tag attached to a support bracket by driver side lower wheel well, in the area of the bumper end cap. I have not been able to get a really clear look or good photo of it yet.
I have found a PPG color chart for 1991 that has a section for Accent Color that identifies a code KS7 with color name Dark Silver Poly for Jeep applications. Good chance that is it but I haven’t found that code on the vehicle yet.
Photo of the body tag near the firewall is attached. I am wondering if the Q7SA is related to trim color info. I am continuing to research that but have not found anything yet. The body color codes PW7/QW7, Bright White, are seen in the photo.

Thanks for the thought. I did some double checking and I believe the flares and bumpers were originally silver on 1991 Laredo models. I dug out the sales brochure from the 1992 that I use to own. (It was also a Laredo with silver trim). I expect that 91 and 92 were similar in options. Per “The Jeep Book for 1992” the Laredo came with dark silver bumpers, dark silver bumper end caps and black front bumper guards. The body cladding was also dark silver. There was no other trim color options listed. Only the Limited model came with color-keyed bumpers, flares and cladding. Maybe the reason I don't find a trim color code on the body tag is that all Laredo models came with silver trim.
I purchased the 91 from the second owner who had it since 1994 and they indicated it had silver trim until bed liner was applied to it due to minor scrapes and chips. I know that what came out of the factory could change from standard during model year but on my 91 the original silver is visible where the bed liner is flaking off. Once I find a suitable color code or replacement for Dark Silver it will be on its way to being restored to original trim color.

After much research I now have confirmation for the paint code for the Dark Silver color used on Cherokee Laredo bumpers, fender flares and lower body cladding. It was used on 1991 and 1992, and possibly through 1995 on XJ models. There is also reference to use on some Wrangler, Dodge trucks and AMC Eagle models.
The Chrysler Jeep paint code for Dark Silver is KS7, or S7. It was only available on Laredo models according to a 1992 sales brochure.
As a FYI, per the 1992 sales brochure the Base and Sport models had black bumpers with black end caps. The Limited model had color keyed exterior trim & bumpers.
As far as I can determine the exterior bumper and trim paint code does not show up on the body ID plate or other info tag. The Chrysler parts catalog does show two dark silver codes on the figure for the ID plate but nowhere could I find those paint codes directly associated to exterior trim.
I was able to confirm the exterior trim paint code with an old school restoration guy who dug out a Dupont paint chip book from the early 90’s. It tied code KS7 to exterior trim for the Cherokee.
The following are paint supplier numbers for KS7, Dark Silver metallic clear coat:
Ditzlar/PPG: 4274
Dupont: B9137
Metalux: 324065MX, paint chip 12-3860
BASF: 21077
Chrysler: DT9065
The following paint reference link contains useful info for this and other paint codes:
