Default Burning Oil

Hi All. I change my oil every 4k-5k miles (99 Cherokee Sport). Every time I do I notice I'm about 2 quarts low. I don't have a leak (no oil in my parking spot at home). I have a tiny bit of blowby which I understand is normal. It's defiantly not 2 quarts worth. I assume it's burning. Is that normal? I do have a check engine light for an O2 sensor. I'm replacing them both tomorrow.

How does your coolant look?

If your letting oil changes go that long till it's 2 qt's low on oil should tell you something. Oil is cheap 3 mo./3,000 mi. what ever comes first.

Gocha. I'll change more often. And my coolant looks fine. I just did a radiator, t-stat and water pump a few weeks ago.

Better yet, just check the oil level and add as necessary. OP, are you not checking the oil level at all between changes, then finding it 2 quarts low?

not checking oil between changes is how the motor goes dry and then its ALL over, owning ANY older vehicle, the oil level should be checked pretty frequently depending on how many miles are driven.

3 months / 3000 miles is sooooo old school. My wife's 02 Mustang called out 5000 miles between changes in the owner's manual. My 02 Camaro calls out when the light comes on, but no more than a year. The change interval isn't what is causing the oil loss.

A small leak may not leave stains on the driveway. If it is small enough, it will get blown all over the under carriage as you drive. Some oil consumption is expected. My father's 98 Neon called out 1 quart of consumption between changes right off the show room floor.

I wouldn't stress the oil loss too much. Start checking your fluids once a week. All of them. Older vehicles randomly start losing fluids. Transmission fluid scares me most as you won't notice it until the tranny starts slipping.

YUP and I call BS he's speaking of an 4.0 motor in an XJ. My 14 Town Car calls foe long time between also and even my 04 WJ with the 4.7HO. In them run Castro full Syn oil and Wix filters 6mo/6,000mi.

On another car it gets changed with new filters (2) every 5mi. or so/weekend and maybe not even that long. It depends on use and like I said oil is one of the cheapest things about owning a car.
