That configuration of cats continued to 2006. Basically the whole point of the coil rail/CA emissions exercise was to squeeze a few more good years out of a solid, known, reliable motor and still meet both CA and federal emissions requirements. Chrysler met their numbers and still managed to tune ten more ft lbs of torque into the last few years using the distributorless ignition.

Also, as stated above it is illegal to remove emission control items regardless of your state's individual emission requirements.
This is done in so many products we buy these days... an actual industry term for it is called, "Planned Obsolescence".
They intentionally design certain components within any device to have a rather specific lifespan and that's it.
Welcome to the evilness of dirtbags in good ole capitalism. lol.

I was worried about it because I have heard bad things about the 2001 xj head gasket cracking. I know the 4.0 liter inline 6 is legendary, so if the head gasket was replaced with a new one, would it last for a long time after that? Or would the new one crack not after long as well? Feedback would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!
Selling my 2000 XJ Limited... check out my vehicle ad. Motor is a Jasper reman motor so any issues were addressed with the build.

I forgot about that term. That was exactly what the dealers in a meeting early one morning said when I was installing their new phone system.

Wow - practically next door!
I doubt my wife will let me get another XJ to play with, but point me to the ad anyway.

Two would be good... one as a spare! BTW the ad is in the Vehicle section.

I was born and raised in Littleton not far from the Groton border/119. Grew up golfing at what was then Groton Country Club. Lots of great Groton memories including Johnson Ice Cream stand!!!

Planned obsolescence, and deliberately designing something to fail are two different things. I don't believe for a minute that there are meetings and decisions being made where they design something deliberately to fail.

Designing something to last "long enough" and help keep "costs down" falls under "planned obsolescence". Deliberately placing pre-cats in a place to to increase wear and tear is conspiracy theory BS.

Nice! I grew up in Westford and actually worked at the Drum Hill Autozone (back when it was Auto Palace) many many years ago.

Your XJ looks nice - and "no rust" is obviously tough to find around here. My wife definitely won't green light another Jeep unfortunately. Good luck, I'm sure it'll find a good home soon.
