Default A/C ???

i searched all the threads i could but came up nothing.
i have a 00' xj. ac only blows cold sometimes. clutch has a redish tint like it has been hot. clutch does engage, and disengage, and blower motor works. when the ac is turned on, the serpentine belt squeals really loud, but only when the ac is on. any advice, thanks

I would say your comp is either going bad,or your belt is worn.

I have not seen a situation where the belt being to tight would cause it to make noise. does it seem to draw the engine down more than before? How much deflection is there on your belt/meaning how for will it go down when you push on it,1/4" tp 1/2" depending on the distance between pulleys.

tension was about a 1/4 at the idler. and yes it does seem to lag the eng. more. i will loosen the belt a little, and check on the ac

If the compressor was going bad it might drag the engine down.

I would check to see if its overfilled with freon, when mine was overfilled my Comp did something similar like trying to stall the motor and making the belt screech...Tj

Thumbs up

X2 Many times people just get a can of refrigerant and shove it in and end up over filling the system and overworking the compressor. Look at the sight glass on the drier mounted on the passenger side frame rail. There should be just a few bubbles seen going by. If not, then it is overfilled.

compressor clutch is fried... to tight of a belt wont matter... dont run your ac now cause if it locks up then the compressor wont spin either and then your a sitting duck... some vehicles you can replace just the clutch but most you have to replace the whole compressor and if you have to do that your suppose to change everything else out in the system due to contamination... i worked at nissan and ive also had this happen on my old lumina but eventualy the clutch fried to the compressor and the starter was no longer able to turn the motor over because the belts and compressor would not let it... also if you cant change just the clutch and you have to spend big money look and see if they make a bypass pully for the 4.0 which im sure they due... thats what i did on mine... bolts in place of the compressor so you can drive around till moneys saved to replace everything... goodluck!

cant find a sight glass anywhere. i will find out how much freon, and i will have the mechanic evacuate, and then refill to the proper amount.
