Removing a shim won't help if the clutch is not electrically engaging.

mweeps,
Is this on your 2001 XJ?
If so, here's a pic that shows the fuses in the PDC and a layout of the relays in the PDC.
Note the COMP CLUTCH fuse.
.
Note the AC Compressor Clutch Relay.

Fuses check out ok and not sure about the relay. I swapped it with the O2 sensor and still no engagement. I will use the wiring diagram and try to check out thing when it stops raining.

Hello Everyone!
I'm hoping some can give me some guidance. So...here's what happened. My radiator went out and I had this "guy" replace it. Ever since my a/c has not worked. The compressor clutch DOES turn so it is not seized. We did the relay testing and checked the fuses...those all work. Have not "jumped" it yet because I can't find anyone to do that for me.
I BELIEVE that when he replaced that radiator...he unplugged something or knocked something loose. A man here at work put the little tester thingy to the "plug" that goes from the electric box to the compressor (bear with me...this is a girl talking to you and I don't know the correct terminology for some things) and got no amps at all. What could possibly be wrong...or, more importantly...how do I get electric to that compressor? (haven't checked the pressure gauges because the compressor isn't on/running...with the compressor OFF...they read 100 lbs on both sides). The A/C light inside the cabin comes on when you press it, but it only blows warm air...the heater works fine.
ANY guidance here would be GREATLY appreciated!!

hello guys, my name is Alvaro and I'm new here.
my xj is having the problem that the compressor does not engage.
i already check the following:
pressure: is ok seated at 32psi with the compressor engaged [to check this i jumper the Low Pressure Switch]
Low pressure switch is ok, i swapped switches with a friend that his xj A/C is currently working perfect
A/C relay and fuse are ok, already check
no air gap on my compressor clutch, already check
the only way i can make the compressor to engage is by placing a jumper on the Low pressure switch...
what i did not check is the high pressure switch, can a faulty HPswitch make my compressor to not engage? how can i check that switch?

I haven't had AC since I owned it, I charged it last year but the clutch wasn't engaging. The compressor is not OEM so one of the POs must have replaced it at one point. After reading about the shim removal trick I decided to attempt it today. I only had one washer/shim so I was hesitant to remove but that solved my problem. I still had perfect pressure from the last charge and now my AC is ice-cold. No more complaints from the wife and kids when we drive on the beach.

134A systems are really easy to overpressurize and cause newer and/or bigger problems. I've done them by feel, but I still prefer a gauge set.
The parts store cans with the little gauge are actually pretty decent and a good call for someone that hasn't done this much. Keep the little gauge in range and you'll usually be pretty close if not a tiny bit undercharged.
Since you've got a known leaker it might pay to get a shop to find the leak and evacuate/recharge the system.

Run a feeler gauge behind it and make sure you are still around .015" clearance. If they are too tight your clutch will self destruct in short order. Most of your better parts stores will actually have the Sanden shim kit in stock for a couple of bucks if you're too tight.

Why do you want to check the clearance? Reference post #26.
