You can't. not w/o a license and they haven't made it for like 5 years or so. they sell a 134a repair and fill kit. if the leak is small enough, which 9 out of 10 times its an O-ring; then the blue dye will seal it.
what most don't know is that in the winter time you are supposed to run the a/c for 5 or so minutes to keep the seals lubed to avoid summertime leaks. Once a month is what is recommended. when it goes from hot to cold the o-rings shrink allowing the freon to leak out.
you really only need to dol an evac and vaccum when the compressor, dryer or evap is replaced. and offcourse any lines that crack or break.
FYI. r134a started in cars back in 1991 so your 96 is def 134a.

Oh thats too funny. Well you learn something new every day. I knew xj's had like the longest running basic body style but for jeep to wait on those kind of upgrades when everyery other manufacturermade the changes; is just stupid.

thats good. but refrigerant does not simply run out. it continuously recirculates. it will only run out by leaking out.
In his case the leak was not detected prolly b/c the machanic was not that experienced in what he was doing. I wonder if the poster of that righ up still has a/c.
Fyi. my experience? i have been a operating engineer for 10 years and i have hvac experience. ask any hvac guy, freon does not simply run out unless there is a leak of some kind.
in that guys case they prolly could not find the leak b/c it was so small and new it would lasr 1-2 years before it would leak out again. thats why they have the dye to help check for leaks. a vac will not pick up a leak if its just been sitting fo 30 min if its a small one. some leaks don't show themselves until an hr passes. been there done that. you have to watch poeple.

The SJ platform was the longest running out of the vehicle lineup, they were made for 30 years ('63-'93).
The XJ platform is the second longest running, they were produced for 17 years ('84-'01).

NAPA has 30lbs bottles of R12, but it will cost close to $1,000 and you have to be licensed to buy it. It has not been produced in the States since 1996, other countries (China) still produce it.
