camshaft question
I have searched, probably not well enough, but I can't find the cam specs for the stock 87 4.0 and the 94 4.0 I would really like to know if they are close enough that I can get away with just swaping the head not tearing into the block that much

sooo...why?
87 and 94 cams are similar (same bearing clearances and journal diameters), but they have different lobe lift specs.
You don't need to worry about the block if you're just swapping heads

which way are you swapping? 94 to 87? There's a bunch of stuff you need to swap depending on which way you go.

I have two jeeps an 87 with a blown trans, a 94 that blew a rod. So I pulled the 94 stripped it down to the block. The plan was to do a full rebuild on the 94 taking what ever I needed off the 87 however due to time constraints (winter almost in full swing) I want to get a running jeep with asap with as little work as possible. My half *** plan that I want to throw together is to just take the rotating assembly (block, crank, cam) from the 87 and put the head, intake, sensors, and accessories from the 94 with a new oil pump and new seals slap it together and call it a day. I really would like to not have to pull the cam, mess with the crank and all that.

Not so sure about that. I have a 92 HO and an 88 Renix cam and they're identical right down to the part number.

I got that info from my FSM collection...
OP as far as the swap goes, least painless thing to do is install the 94 head on the 87, and use the intake/exhaust off the 87, and swap all the 87 sensors over to the 94 head. As cruiser pointed out the intake/exhaust ports are a bit different, but not so much that it won't work.
