Default Can a 4x4 AW4 convert to 4x2?

I have a 97 4x2 and I just lost 1st and reverse after over 300,000 miles. I'm looking to replace it but all I can find, affordable near me, are 4x4 models. Is there a tail section I can move over or just remove the transfer case? Any info would help. Thanks

nope. the tailstock on the 2wd trans is not removeable. therefor, you would need a trans from a 2wd model to work.

i guess you could technically use a 4x4 trans, but you would need the t-case in order to have a drive shaft. but you would need to move the shift lever into 2wd mode by hand before you install. i wouldn't suggest this route, however.

If you just can't find a 2wd AW4 for your year, you could use a 4wd version.
You'll need the transfer case and the rear driveshaft, which will be shorter
than yours. Or, have a shop shorten your present driveshaft. Put, as Caged
said above, the transfer case in 2Hi and it will do all you need from it. Make sure it
always has fluid in it, as they can leak from several places.

Best to use a 97 transmission. Here is a link to a page that addresses AW4
compatibility issues between the different years of the XJ.

Also, get a 97-99 Parts list from here. https://xjjeeps.com/

P.S. Try this junkyard search to see what transmissions (2wd especially) are available.

There's enough posts lately of guys trying to go from 4x2 -> 4x4, you could probably bum one of the leftover transmissions. Heed the "Everything AW4" thread posted above, which covers the interchangeability between years. It also touches on the difference between the 2wd and 4wd transmissions, which have different tailcone/adapters and different length output shafts making them difficult to swap.

A grand Cherokee uses a different trans than the Cherokee.
