Model: Cherokee (XJ)
Engine: 4.0 L 6-cylinder
Default Can anyone help me diagnosis this sound?

It’s a 2000 Sport and it started making this ticking sound.
  • it’s loudest at a cold start
  • The ticking gets more rapid when the accelerator is pressed
  • It quiets down significantly when the engine is warmed up or at high RPM
Really trying to figure out if it’s just a lifter tick or if I have an exhaust leak somewhere. I tried putting sea foam in the throttle body to see if I could see any smoke coming out of the engine bay, but didn’t spot any.

I’m hoping it’s just the notorious lifter tick.

hoping to push this up because I have the exact same problem. Mine is very very loud hoping I didn’t waste my money on it. Thanks!

Hey man. Mine ended up being a crack in the rear exhaust manifold. Replaced it with a $20 junkyard part. All good now.
