Default Can (or should) I put 17" wheels on my Cherokee?

I found a deal on some 17" rock krawler wheels, but not sure how they would perform on my 1993 XJ. Mostly I see 15" wheels. Kind of new to this and want to save a buck or two, but I also want to put the proper stuff on too. The wheels have 285 70R/17 BFG's on them.

well the reason you mostly see 15's is that the tires are cheaper for them then the larger wheels and when you go to larger wheels you will have to deal with metric tire sizes instead of a normal 31 or 33 i would stick with the 15's but the 17's will work ok

Thanks.....I believe the 285's are about a 32.5" tire.......I just want to make sure there wont be any major performance difference. I dont want to sacrifice performance for a deal.

it will work fine but if you are going from a 235 to this set up it will slow the jeep down and make over drive hard to use until you regear

285 is to large for XJ. You 'll need spacers for the wheels.
I use for highway 235/60/18

It depends on back spacing of his wheels. The op mentioned rockcrawler wheels. They are most likely less than stock 5.25 B.S.
Spacers not needed.

A 285 tire section width is only about 11.5 in. wide.

If the vehicle is used offroad a 17in. wheel in a relatively small 32 in. tire makes the wheel more prone to damage.
