Since it's a 2wd manual I'd definitely say locker in a Chrysler 8.25 97+, put on disc brakes and swap it in quick easy, and fairly cheap. Since you have a manual (if it's a 4.0) it came with 3.07 gears, if you get a 8.25 out of an automatic it will have 3.55 gears which is good for offroad, lift, and bigger tires.

Both positive upgrades and worthwhile the 97+ Chy 8.25 will usually run 1-$200 and if you use a lunchbox locker you won't have to re-setup the gears just bolt it in. The plus side of the 3.55 gears is you can use a larger tire with a small lift for your off road use.
