Nice work!! Yeah, the full power for the headlights go through the switch. A common mod is to use a new harness and 2 relays to power the headlights directly off the battery. The existing headlight wiring and switch is used to energize the relays.
Here's a vid of it. Of course, you can fab up your own harness rather than buy one already made.
