I was just wondering if you can use synthetic oil in a 93 jeep cherokee with a 4.0l ho engine with 87,000 miles on it. and if there was any side effects for anybody?

I've been running synthetic in my 95 HO since I bought it with 106,000 miles on her. she has 114,000 now.

Side effects, cost me more to do an oil change

I use 10W-40 Castrol High Mileage. She was at 185K when bought her and she is at 239K, now. Still runs like a Banchee and doesn't burn a drop.

Now, keeping the valve cover and oil pan from leaking is another story. As this is the first straight 6 engine I've ever owned, I chalk this up to a long motor flexing and expanding and contracting with temperature change.

I wouldn't recommend using synthetic. I really don't think the advantages of using synthetic over regular Dino sludge is worth the extra expense of each oil change in an XJ. Just one opinion, though.

Started at 55,000 miles and now at 156,000. No problems at all with Synthetic

i bought my xj with 100k on it... i just had the oil changed and i threw 5w-30 in it since its getting colder here in md. im sticking with dino so far since i have no clue what the previous owner used, and well with the high mileage. im not trying to have her leaking oil all over cause i decided to switch to synthetic

Good call. If I ever get rich enough to buy me a new Corvette or Viper, I'll put the synthetic in there. For my good old XJ, I'll stick to Dino juice. Kind of like a Harley. So long as there is a little leak somewhere, I know it still has oil in it....LOL.
