Default cat or no cat?

So i think my cat has a hole in it because i can see smoke coming for it whens it cold. The muffler shop wanted like 178 dollars for a new one. i dont have emissions but idk if i want to ran no cat. let me know what you think or where i can get a cheaper cat or whole exhuast.

If you have to run a cat because of emissions then this is what I would do. I would purchase your own cat, and then have the exhaust shop make you a "test pipe" to replace the cat. This way you can unbolt your cat for better performance or bolt in the cat for emissions. The "test pipe" is just a piece of straight pipe with two flanges on each end to bolt in place of the cat.

My friend bored out his cat, and then has it inspected by a good friend who "bypasses" that test.

well hollowing out a cat is bad cause you mess up the back pressure and putting a strait pipe in would be okay bu you wont have the EGT sensor thus making the check engine light on. But yes you can run no cat. just dont let the cops see ya.

it will relieve some backpressure. not sure if thats a good thing or not. some cars lose alot of low end power with no cat but gain high end.
as far as emissions for all the who think you cant pass without cats its not true at all. its only a problem if youre area does a visual inspection for cats. i pass every year in my 86 gt mustang and it has no emissions and a offroad h pipe, egr block off plate, no smog pump, nada..
if the cats bad get rid of it. if you dont have a welder you will have to find a shop willing to weld up your exaust w/ no cat, alot wont for liability and shop reputation issues.if the cats plugged up as it maybe you sure will run alot better without it. if indoubt buy a high flow aftermarket cat. it will still keep some backpressure but open things up a lil.i doubt you will notice any differance though unless its plugged up now

I just ran a turbo muffler where the cat used to be for a while. No shop needed, just a muffler and a clamp and a turndown tip. It didn't sound all that hot though, I've heard a glasspack sounds better. Another option if you're looking for ALOT of sound is to get a Magnaflow cat from Summitracing:

Then a 90 degree bend off the cat to exit just before the rear wheel. It's LOUD, but it's pretty cool. Conversation can become a little difficult during acceleration though, lol.

every time my exhaust was ripped off before the cat on any vehicle, i lost a tremendous amount of low end power, and it was just annoying. always weld it up when i get back home.

the bottom line is: run a cat. if you don't then that is more ammo for treehuggers to give wheelers a bad name. not to mention illegal

We don't have to get smog tested so, the muffler shop took mine off when I had my exhaust system done.
