I had a severely clogged cat two years ago that I temporarily hollowed out until I could pony up the $$$ to buy a new one. I noticed no loss in low-end grunt. The exhaust note became slightly louder but nothing obnoxious...I actually thought it sounded nice!

Mine is pretty much the same as Flexxed Out. 2.5" pipe from the "S" back only I have a Flow Master 40. I love the way she sounds.

I don't think you guys quite get the picture. Not running a cat converter is a Federal Offense not a state offense emissions check or not. That makes it illegal and unethical. As KTM said it gives those who hate wheelers more ammo against us. Also since it's illegal you can't discuss it here. End of story. I know no one here is running a 70's model XJ so you are required by law to run one.

Running with out a cat is illegal on a vehicle built for street use after 1978 in most cases. However, off road no cat be required. Therefore, you can always run the cat on road and test pipe off road if you want to keep it truly legal. I prefer a cat as it provides more low end power for the jeep, however if you prefer the top end then you have the right to do so, off road. Also running without a exhuast is worth nothing on a cheokee. It sounds like a tractor but it has absolutely no power. The 4.0's need back pressure. I've tried several different combos on the jeep and the best one I found was to run just an OME cat then drop the exhaust out after that with no muffler. Sounds great and awesome balance of low and highend power. Discovered that when I landed my exhuast on a rock and had to pull the rest off.

Actually the surface you drive your rig on is irrelevant if you have a state tag/license for that rig. If you tag your vehicle you are required by both federal and state guidelines to maintain that vehicle in a street legal manor. If you don't want to be governed by those laws and regulations don't tag your vehicle and if you tag your vehicle and it is not street legal you have also violated the law. Drag cars and buggies don't tag their vehicles because they are not meant to be driven onroad. Granted in states that have no emissions checks chances of getting caught are slim but if a shop works on the exhaust that does not have a cat they could lose their license to operate.

beadlocks are not DOT approved, neither is a roll cage. This has been discussed and just because it's not DOT is still being debated weather it's illegal or not. However, just to be on the safe side I prefer the stuan internal beadlocks. They are fully street legal with out question, support both side of the bead, and don't weight a crap ton.
