i have one on my xj, and with a stock cobra radio i have talked to my brother in law (who hauls water and condensate) over 12 miles away, and it came through clear. i have mine mounted on the opposite side of the radio antenna, and its slick. in the pics its kinda hard to see, but its on the drivers side. ill post another pic this weekend closer up. but ya, i love the way its set up, and the funny thing is that i still read resistance in my system, but not from the wireing, for some reason it is reading resistance through my windshield, but if i can hear clearly for 12 miles (possibly more) without boosting my watts up from the stock settings, im pretty happy with it, and it doesnt stick up way high or look out of place, i dig it

just please, dont get a fiberglass antenna. you cant adjust or trim them if you need to, and they arent as good as normal steel ones. and also, they dont bend as much when you go through brush and stuff, fiberglass ones could themselves break or break the mount they are on when going through brush. and just my opinion, i think a giant fiberglass stick looks kinda cheesy, but thats just my opinion lol

It's true that they're not as flexible as a thin metal whip, but that's what a spring between the mount and antenna is for. If you don't have one, you're asking for a broken mount no matter what type of antenna you're using. Add to that the fact that fiberglass antennas can generally boast the same range as a wire whip due to their construction (wire-wrapped underneath the coating), and there's almost no reason not to use one. They're cheaper, easier to use, and more compact.
OP, you can get CB antenna mounts at your local Radio Shack, and usually for pretty cheaply.

after doing some more research, i stand corrected. my previous information on cb radios and antennas was derived from the mechanic at high planes transport, the company where my brother-in-law works, and i guess the mechanic doesnt really know all about it, through he seemed convincing. after more research, i have found that fiberglass antennas are the most efficient, and generally easier to use. The only downfalls they seem to have is that they aren't as flexible, and they cant handle large amounts of wattage, which in most cases doesn't matter because the limitation is 4 watts on stock radios, the only way it would matter is if you had your wattage boosted up, then the best choice would be a base loaded antenna. My set-up is with a base loaded antenna, mounted on my hood, and i have reached out to around or over 12 miles, so from my research and my personal experience, it would come down to personal preference, and the amount of money you would want to spend. so, thank you for correcting me.
