Wire it directly to fuse box, and battery. (Skip the old wire harness) Should have 1 red wire, run it to the battery (constant pos. power) 1 yellow wire, run it a key switched spot in fuse box. (illumination, lights up display when on) 1 black ground, run to a good ground spot. I run it up to the battery with the red. (constant neg.) If you have 1 blue wire, it goes to the amp. on/off. The rest should be speakers wires. If you have RCA outputs, use them to run to amp. Some models only have sub RCA outputs. RCA outputs/amp. produce better sound quality. That's what I do!...JMO!

There's are reasons why I don't use factory wiring. First, can't trust what the PO did before you. Second, factories use 18 ga. for speakers. It's too small. Could also have worn spots in them by now. (19 years of vibrations already). And this way, you know what you have, And where to look if there's a problem (or who to blame) I myself, have two 1' tweeters in the dash, two 5 1/4" (full range 3 ways) in the front doors, two 6x9" (full range 3 ways) in the rear hatch, One 10" sub in the rear pocket. All Rockford Fosgates. And a 1400 watt 5 channel amp. under the rear seat, Powering them all. All new wiring included. And it sounds great, and staying in there. For the life of the XJ.

i totally agree with you on yanking the old wiring for a top notch, trouble free system, however i just put a new pioneer unit in my heep and i used a harness adapter from walmart (of all places) for the princely sum of $8 and the colors were an exact match, no guess work for what wire is what. the only thing i don't like about the harness is it has three different plugs and it's a tight fit to stuff all of it behind the new head unit. all new wiring is great, don't get me wrong, but you can put current technology into your jeep without it. especially if you're a broke-*** like me!

Reply to muddpigg; Talk about hard to stuff in the dash. With my head unit, I have 3 pairs of RCA cables, The old speaker leads which I'm not using, The 2 power leads, 1 grd. lead, 1 amp on/off lead, the ant. cable, a power FM radio module, And a 10 gig. hard drive, Stuffed behind the head unit. My head unit is a Pioneer DEH-P90HDD, heres a site that sells them, and it's specs. http://www.federalstereo.com/pidecdstplw1.html I bought it about 6 years ago, a refurbished unit for $450. These came out in 2000, And sold for $1800. and still hold quit a price. Pioneer has web page dedicated to this model. To up date firm ware, And the Grace note music data base.

holy crap!!! - and all that on a single-din unit!!! i just dropped $250 for
DEH - P7100BT from www.onlinecarstereo.com. install was pretty straight forward plus the bluetooth sync and ipod capabilities are perfect for taking long road trips. the only thing i want to add is a powered bazooka tube, but hey maybe someday soon - lately when i open my wallet all i find is dust and lint

Yea! They are incredible units. I feel in love with them when they came out. It was there top of the line in 2000. But I wasn't going to pay $1800. They are more like a sound processor, than a head unit. You go to Best Buy, and ask about them. they have never even seen one. When you first apply power to them. You have to tell it, Correct Date, what kind of car (truck, van, SUV, coupe, etc.) where your sitting, how many passengers, Internal or external crossovers, Internal or external sub. Any CD played in it, gets recorded to the hard drive, Labeled & stored (Holds 160 hrs. on the 10 gig. In WMA format) So you only have to play the disc once. Beats carrying a lot of CD's with you. Actually I had a 6 changer under the rear seat. But I pulled at back out after I got about a hounded hrs. of music on the head unit. Didn't need it. And it's all controllable with a credit card size remote, from the drivers seat.

I don't really get the need for all of that.
Why not just buy a 160 gig iPod, and a good iPod friendly headunit? Well under half the price, more storage, and you don't have to worry about a hard drive stuffed behind your stereo.

First, think about what Ipod model was out. In the year 2000. Although 160 gig. is the norm. now. 10 years ago a 160 gig. HD, would of been considered a monster (even in a desktop). It's a 2.5" (anti-shock laptop style) Hard drive that's used. And I have thought about switching it to a larger model drive. If a 10 gig. HD, can hold 160 hrs. Imagine what a 120 gig. HD can hold. (160 x 12 = 1,920 hrs. or 80 days worth of constant music) And it does have (iPod friendly) input in front, A long with other input capabilities. Like A/V Second, The HD uses WMA format, Which is better sound quality than MP3 format. That the IPod uses. But I do like the IPod, And they are handy, because of their size. I also own a 3rd. gen IPhone. Third, It's the head units capabilities that sold me. The internal crossovers for one, I don't have to keep adjusting the freg. outputs of the amp. to get the sound I want. (makes it sound like a componet speaker system, Highs up front, Mids in the middle, lows in back, Super lows far back) Or volume outputs of the amp.. So the driver seat is at the center of where the sound meets. Or the time delay of the speakers, I can easily make it sound like, I'm in a concert hall. All with a touch of the remote, without leaving my drivers seat. When passengers are in back, I can tell it. So they don't get stuck only hearing the bass. Because they are the closest to the bass. And fourth, I love music. Last time I counted , I owned over 5000 Cd's. But to me, music should sound just like it was recorded. I.E. Pink Floyd should sound like your in the arena, with them. Not just hear it, but feel it. All around you. Even my house surround system, I have the Bose AM 15's. (the 10 speaker cube array with a powered sub). I'll never get rid of them.
