Granted, but since he's talking about an '88, I figured it best not to confuse the issue. He may well have some detonation going on, too. I run the NGK Iridiums in mine. They do last a long time.

It's been months and thousands of miles including a camping trip over and back a mountain pass. Never heard ping or detonation. Not saying it didn't happen, I just never caught it if there was any. I have had issues with Bosch and champion plugs more then a few times before in my aircooled VW's so it wouldn't surprise me if it was a **** plug from the store.

You might not hear the ping/pre-detonation, but it's there.

I agree. This damage was caused by detonation. Time to investigate further! Overly hot plugs can actually cause detonation on their own.

Also just had a champion r12lyc fail on me after 1000 miles. What NGK for a 98.

This is just great. I run across this thread after literally just changing my plugs last night. Went back with the Champion OE part. Hope they last a little while anyway.

Can't win...

I'm sure you will be just fine. There are tens of thousands of vehicles on the road right now with champion plugs in them and they are not all parked along the side of the road waiting for a tow. I would put more emphasis on making sure you buy good beer.

Couple ways to deal with carbon if it concerns you.

Use BG 44K in the fuel tank per the directions.

Or de-carbon the pistons/valves using water.

I just drove it to Nashville this past weekend and it did fine. Noticed a little increase in fuel mileage as well.
