Actually, the 1988-1992 XJ 4.0 Champion RC9YC NGK cross reference is FR5. The FR5-1 was introduced in 1993 as the cross reference for the RC12LYC.
In any case, the NGK "5" heat range is hotter than the Champion "9" heat range. NGK "5" is equivalent to Champion "12". Why NGK suggests that their FR5 plugs are the equivalent of the Champion RC9YC plugs is beyond me.
