Default Change fuel pump without pulling tank. Degree of difficulty?

My fuel pump on my '90 Cherokee XJ has finally screwed the pooch. I'm not too crazy about pulling the tank, but a couple of other Cherokee owners I know say that's the only way to do it.

I've watched a couple of YT videos of folks installing a new pump in a new tank, but I can't get past the feeling that it may be a headache to accomplish when I'm on my back underneath the beast.

Do any of you have any experience with this task? Is it a piece of cake or a royal PITA?

Special shout out to Cruiser54. He popped in my thoughts while I was working on some minor issues on the old girl the other day. Hope you're doing good, Kimosabe!

The fuel pump in the earlier Cherokees is accessible without pulling the tank or cutting holes in the floor.

I'm still out here. Great to hear from you.
You'll have no issue getting the fuel pump out with the tank in. Spray the area liberally with some spray lube. Do you guys have rust issues where you're at?

That confirms what I was thinking. The other guys were saying they couldn't get their pumps in because the o-ring is too big. I'm guessing they didn't have it seated correctly.

Thanks for the video, lawsoncl!

Thankfully, no rust issues. I'm far enough from the ocean for it to not be an issue. I'm down to just 3 trucks now; the '90 Cherokee XJ, a '94 K5 Blazer (low milage) and a '08 Prado.

All three still look almost as good as the day they left the factory. In fact, they barely have surface rust on some parts, except the brake master cylinder on the Cherokee.

I'm getting to the point where I hardly drive anymore. It may be time to thin the herd.

Thanks for the video, lawsoncl!
I just did a new tank and pump and sender on my 96 last summer. There was an o ring included with the tank, and one with the sender. They weren’t the same size. Thankfully one of them was the right size. Which one I don’t remember.

That's interesting. I should be able to use the old ring if the new one is not the correct size. Thanks for your post, tic1976.

I'm in my 12th yr. of retirement and am almost embarrassed by the amount of driving I do now compared to the past. Fortunately it's all in old Jeeps!
