It's a full 1,000 years since this thread was made, but I broke one of my waaay bent j-bolts getting it off yesterday - spent $3.29 each for new ones at the Freightliner dealership along with a 47-cent lock nut to use with the old washer and weird-sprocket-looking thing that was on it. Works like a charm!! I suppose the longer stock bolts would give you a little more wiggle room to get the hoses going to the fill port on because they are NOT easy, but I got them on enough even with my fat hands.
Freightliner battery hold downs for the win!! GREAT tip. No thanks for $37 for the same exact part from Mopar..................I mean that is just robbery.

Thanks for confirming that. What size tank are you running, 20gal? Also, any idea what the weight limit on those Freightliner battery hold downs, I didn't see any of that info on the Freightliner website?

20 gallon or 15 gallon, the tank shells are one and the same. The difference in capacity is dictated by the overflow vent pipe inside.
i ended up using my inductive heater to magically heat the nuts to cherry red and they came off painlessly. I didn’t think I could get the tool in there.
It’s from Amazon. It is a Chinese copy of the $500+ device. Works GREAT. Many variations of the same thing out there. I saw some on eBay for the same tool but with a case. Only works on ferrous metals. Not to be used if you have a pacemaker.
Exhaust hangar/fuel tank heat shield 18mm shouldered-bolt. Took about a minute to get this bigger bolt hot.

After de-fueling the tank the rest of the way (hooked up a 12V battery to the heavier gauge black and orange wires on the old pump’s harness), I used some paper towels to sop up the rest of the fuel. I was surprised how low the fuel pickup is inside the tank. There was about a tablespoon full of rust debris and dirt inside the tank. The residual fuel evaporated quickly and remove the debris was easy by banging the tank on the floor and using a shop vac to suck it up.
I finished the tank project up to the point of before zipping up the straps all the way as I want to leave it hanging loose so it’ll make it easier to install new fill and vent hoses that I ordered last night. I put a lot of anti seize on the hanger strap bolts and also dowsed the hardware with some Amsoil anti corrosion spray. It’s basically the same stuff as aerosol Woolwax. When I’m finally done with this project (including body work), I’m gonna spray Woolwax Black on the bottom like I have done on previous vehicles. That stuff is incredible and definitely slows/stops corrosion and it is thick stuff. I heat up the paint can with a heat gun and it almost liquifies. Then pour it into a special spray gun that came with the Woolwax kit.
