If you have no locking device in either axle what one would you do first, front or rear?. Limited funds, but both ends will get a locker in due time.

Vehicle: '90 XJ Dana 30 front, Dana 35 rear, 3.55 gears. It is used for mainly dry desert wheel'n.
While I agree that in the long run locking a D-35 is like polishing a turd(coming from a guy with a locked D-35). You say you do mostly dry desert wheeling...

What kind of desert wheeling... dune running? Rock crawling? washout wheeling? Baja type of stuff? Each type of wheeling has its own set of requirements...

Agree with defferent types of desert wheel'n. Most times 4 wheel is used rock crawling and in slow tight washes. When running "Baja" or fast roads and washes 2 wheel is used. So I guess a locker would be needed for rock crawling or slow tight areas.

ive got a 8.25/29 out back, if i could find a cheap enough locker id lock that first because it doesnt flex as good as my dana30 does, my 30 is unstoppable i doubt it needs traction as much but that 8.25 sure does on some obstacles

I have a Lock Rite in a D44, and it only rachets when I turn. The sharper the turn, the faster the (clicking). If I apply enough trottle in the turn, it will lock and stop ratcheting. When I'm going straight, I can't even tell it's there. This is my first locker, so I do not have anything to compare it to. Coming from an open diff. it feels like another world. I think that you'll dig it!! Good luck!!

When I put my EZ-locker in I went to a heavy lube(75w-140).. The only time I hear it, is if I am on the throttle when turning.... If I ease through the turn I can't hear it at all...

But I will agree... the extra traction alone is worth any amount of noise...

wow thanks. so it looks like $230 for the lock rite / aussie locker for the front (anyone know the difference? and are they both made by Powertrax?) and then $400 for the rear powertrax no slip.

I would say look around for a used front locker for that D30. Seems like people upgrade from the lunchbox style to a full locker on the d30 quite often. For the rear, I doubt you will have much luck on finding a used unit.

If I might make a suggestion, 3.07 gears and a manual trans brings the suck. Why not buy only one locker right now and spend the rest on a gear set and install kit?

If it were me, I would track down a used locker for the front and buy some gears and install kits. Then save up for the installation.

I'm a little partial to the Smurfs lunchbox, so I would suggest that one.

Seriously though, lunchbox is the slang term for the drop in style lockers you are thinking of buying.

I don't think this is correct. Richmond Gear makes powertrax. Aussie is made by torque-masters technology. People confuse both because Bill Cole assisted in the development of the lockright and then departed them and helped create the aussie, which is pretty much the same but they aren't related.
