Default Check Engine Light bulb replacement

Hello all.
I failed inspection in November because my check engine light wasn't working, turns out it was burned out and I didn't even notice it wasn't showing up at ignition start like it's supposed to. In efforts to switch the bulb, I bought both 194 and 74 because I'm idiot and didn't look at them first, but I couldn't get the old bulb (looked like a 74) out of the plug. Eventually resorted to cloth and pliers but of course the bulb broke. Opted to swap the plug with the plug from the cruise control spot as I don't have that but it shows up on ignition. That bulb lasted for a little while before it too went dead. Prior to it dying, it would also come and go for different lengths of time; Stay on long, disappear briefly, stay on briefly, disappear for awhile, etc.
I also bought an OBD scanner and know I have an Evap Leak. But I would like to get the CE light fixed so my mechanic can at least verify his work.

What is the best method to remove these bulbs? Is it better to just buy new plug/inserts? Should I opt to just get LEDs. But what size are the inserts?

I haven't ever messed with pulling the bulb from the plug, but I have moved the entire assembly (bulb still in the plug) from a different slot that isn't used in my model, like you did. Cruise, sentry, low Washer, up arrow for manual trans, "full time" depending on your transfer case, heck even the Seat belt warning.

On the note of LED, you might as well upgrade if you're buying new. They'll last longer and use less power, however LED will probably be more expensive and a bit brighter, which might make night driving a little more difficult. The bulb size is PC74 for the whole thing or 74 for just the bulb.

As for the light working intermittently maybe the bulb wasn't good? I believe the CEL can come on and off depending on what triggers it, could be wrong about that though. I do know if what triggered the light is fixed the light will be cleared after 50 on/off cycles of the ignition.
