Default Check Gauges light on Alt. Charging gauge not indicating

I'm thinking the gauge itself is failing periodically. The gauge registers perfectly at the start of the trip and then stops working and trips the check gauges circuit. Have verified that the charging circuit is in good shape and charging! Before I tear apart the dash wanted to see if other had any similar experience?

Do a gauge cluster self check when this happens.
Then (when this happens) and you shut the engine off and restart, does it go back to normal?

Make sure all your connections are clean and tight. Especially the battery and alternator connections.

If you verified when the gauge goes 0 that your alt is charging normally, it might just be in the part between pcm and gauge.

It's a 2000, so the PCM is telling the dash what to display right? Get an OBD reader and see what the PCM is reporting when this happens. Have you measured the voltage at the battery when this is happening?
